Nick approached us to shoot a video for his new band HALLOW SANCTUM after the release of our last metal video by FEED THE ADDICTION for their song “MISERY”. After speaking with him we decided to go with a penitentiary look and we knew we could do it completely at the studio. We built this set based off of old sets. A cornered 5 panel set. We took out the floors and exposed our studio concrete look. We painted the walls white and blue to emulate a real jail cell. ERIK JENSEN, who works on jail sets for shows including ESCAPE AT DANNEMORA and THE STAIRCASE, helped in designing and constructing the set 24 hours before shooting because of our busy booking schedule at the studio. We built the jail cell bars out of wood and cut them right on site at our studio. Once we had everything in place we added some textured spray paint then used variations of gray white and black to get the bars looking just right. We used a textured copper spray for some details. We took out our window and added some excess bars we had for extra. We used a crash pad we had in the back and the drop cloth we used to spray paint the bars as the bed. We just put a couple apple boxes under it to give it some lift.
We shot this video entirely on the Sony FX3 in XAVCS-I 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 with the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 at ISO 800 / 12,800. We graded and edited it in FCPX starting with the UTOPIA LUT from Phantom LUTs. We shot for 2.35:1 before shooting and cropped it in post.
An aputure Nova P300C was shining a ton of light at a temperature of 2000k through a 6x4 one stop diffusion panel. This way we can shoot the window and we won’t see the studio in the background. We squeaked in an Aputure LS 60x fresnel right next to the panel through the window to create shadows of the bars on the back wall. We then back lit it with a fresnel hanging from our ceiling grid. We had an Amaran 60x to bouncing some light on the bars to get a little bit more out of the image we had on a varipole. We also had an Amaran 200x on wheels moving it to where we needed it to be for each shot. We consistently pumped haze all day. After we took the bars into the cyclorama and her it up by c stands and sands bags. We had our actor sit on a bed act out the reverse shots. We projected images created by our pal, LONGEST SOLO EVER, onto our cycle wall. We asked him to clash warm and cool tones and create depth in a prison hall way with cells on each side with some volumetric lighting. He delivered. We could have green screened it but we knew we could nail it this way and it came out great. We then added the guys to do singles so we had it as extra and its a good thing because we ended up needing them. After we just completely blacked out the room and used our Amaran f22c with a soft box and honey come point straight down and pulsed it red. We used our nova and LS 60x to add some more pulsing. Mix a ton of haze and add a fresnel back light and we had a nice look. All of this accomplished in one day with a lot of planning.
Two months later, LUCAS SPENCER came in to finally film his parts. We have this set ready to rock whenever so it was an easy one hour set up, shoot and take down.
We loved how this came out and we hope you do to!!
